Backups - Overview

The Backup Manager allows you to create a backup, which is either temporarily available for one day, or permanently stored on your web space.

You can back up the current state of your FTP-data, databases, and email messages. Individual options can also be combined. This makes it possible for you to, i.e. only back up databases and emails, or only FTP data and emails.

Backups - Summary of Features

Creating a Backup
To create a backup, open your Backup-module and click on the button create. This will open a step-by-step wizard that guides you through the process.

Step 1: Select data for backup
In the first step, a selection of data to be secured, is required. Please be sure to note any further options. For example, when selecting databases to be included in your backup, you can specifically select a certain database.

Step 2: Select archive options
Here you have the possibility to choose the archive type for your backup.
Available formats are zip, gzip and b2zip:

  • zip - This file type is generally supported by most operating systems.
  • gzip or b2zip - For these file types you normally have to install third-party software. However, they are known for their very small file size.

Step 3: Select destination
Decide whether your backup is to be stored temporarily for one day, or permanently saved to your web space.

Step 4: Confirmation
At the end of the operation, all the chosen settings are listed to you once more. If you would like to make changes or corrections, switch back to the previous steps by clicking Prev and make your corrections.

Additional information
Please note that permanently stored backups of your data will consume space of your hosting package. So make sure that there is enough free space available, before requesting an update.
In addition, backups that are stored within your www-directory, just like all other data, are publicly available, provided that the permissions have not been adjusted or directory protection has been applied.

All data is also automatically backed up on a daily basis. These backups reach back up to seven days and, on written request (support@domaintechnik.at), can also be loaded for you. Depending on the time spent for this manual effort, additional fees apply.

What can you do with existing backups?
The use of existing backups depends on the type of the data. Here are some examples of how such backups could be used:

FTP data backup (archive)
When creating a backup of your FTP data, all files of the folder (selected during the backup process) are being included into an archive. You can download and unpack this archive to your computer and view the files instantly. In case that you need to load backed up data onto your web space, you can simply upload them using a FTP client of your choice.

MySQL database backup
When creating a MySQL backup, the database is being saved as SQL dump file. You can save this file locally on your computer. If you need to load a database backup, you can simply use the Import-function of the database administration tool.

Email backup (archive)
When backing up your email messages, all folders (inbox, sent items, drafts, trash, etc.), including the messages they contain, combined into an archive, will be stored. You can download this archive to your computer, unpack it, and depending on your email client, open and/or import the messages.
