Weblog

A weblog (from the words 'web' and 'log'), often just called 'blog', is a website, which periodically lists articles. New articles are listed on the top, older ones follow in the reverse chronological order.

History

The first weblogs appeared in the mid 90s. They were called online-diaries and were websites, on which an internet user would create periodic articles about their own life. One of the first online bloggers is known as Simon Gisler, who has been posting articles in his blog since 1994.

Since 1996, services like Xanga have come up, which allow users to easily create their own weblog.
After a slow start, blogging sites started to boom in the late 90s. Xanga for example grew from 100 blogs in 1997, to 50 million blogs in 2005.

The term "weblog" appeared in '97, the short version "blog" in 1999, the year in which the general boom for websites of this kind began. After 2001, even the traditional media became conscious of this new type of publishing.

Different Types

With the constant growth of the blog-sphere, the variety of different types weblogs increases as well. Aside from the classical weblog systems, there ar a growing number of other personal blogs which become especially useful due to their user-friendliness. A vast amount of blogging systems contain a mix of comments, interesting links and diary entries, which are mainly used for entertainment or to express oneself.
Other applications like photoblogs (phlog), are mainly used for publishing photographs or pictures from a cell-phone camera (moblog). Faster data rates and new download-technologies allow even to post large sequences of videos as live-stream (vlog).

Some blog systems used for specific subjects, have established their own terms like 'blawg' or 'weblawg' (law), 'litblog' (literature), 'warblog', 'linkblog', etc...

Technical
