Questions and answers concerning FTP:

How do I establish a FTP connection to my website?

First you need a FTP client program. There are various such programs with different features.

For loading the contents on the server we recommend "WS FTP" for windows. There is a limited edition version for private purposes to download free of charge at the software producers.
The shareware program is called "WS_FTP LE 5.08".
This version can be found here.

For Macintosh we recommend the program "FETCH".
This can be found under: http://fetchsoftworks.com/

At logging in you are asked for your FTP user name (also: login or ouser id) and your password.

Your FTP user name: yourdomain_com (e.g. testdomain_com)
Password: yourmainpassword (the same as for the Domaintechnik Control Panel)

How do I connect myself with another FTP program to my website?

FTP client programs like "Cute FTP", "Absolute FTP" and other need three data, so that a connection can be established:

  • The host name or the IP address of the site, with which you want to connect yourself: yourdomain.com
  • The corresponding login (userid): yourdomain_com
  • The password for the account: yourmainpassword (the same as for the Domaintechnik Control Panel)

What are the files and directories for, which I see after logging in via FTP?

After logging in you are situated in main directory of your accounts (i.e. in a subarea of the server directories, which is to your disposal).

In this main directory are several files and directories, which are  indispensable for the functionality of your site and which therefore should not be removed or renamed. Do not pay attention to the files, but to the directory www.

The directory www including possible existing subdirectories is for taking all files which belong to your website. All files, which are uploaded in the superior directory (the main directory), can not be reached via . If someone accesses your domain via http:// an automatic forwarding takes place into the directory www.

All log files are in the directory logs. The web server (HTTP) journalizes all accesses to your website into the log file access_log (thus to files in the www tree). These logs are read and displayed by your online statistic.

Can I set up several independent FTP users?

Yes, you can establish several independent FTP users with our online tool FTP Manager. This tool can be ordered with costs as optional supplement in the customer zone for a domain.

With this tool create several users for different directories within your root directory. The additional users can only work within the defined area and not in all directories of your website.
