FAQs: EmailQuestions and answers concerning email:
What is the correct syntax of my user name? The user name should be yourname%yourdomain.com Example: If you get an error message when retrieving emails check the user name registered in your mail program überprüfen and actualize it if necessary. In addition you have to check the option My server requires authentication at the menu item SMTP-Server. All details can be found in our manual for changing email options in Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft Outlook Express. If you should still have any problems at receiving emails, please contact our customer service under support@domaintechnik.at. How can I receive and/or send my emails localindependently? At Domaintechnik.at you can make use of the Webmail Service for your localindependent email administration. Enter the following address in your browser: yourdomain.com/up (substitute "yourdomain.com" with your actual domain name). In order to log on to webmail you need your user name and your password. What is a POP3 email account?POP3 is the abbreviation for "Post Office Protocol, Version 3", a widely-used protocol for user authentication and for downloading of emails. In order that your email client (e.g. Outlook Express) knows, on which POP3 account access is possible, you have to disclose the server address (the post office), as well as the POP3 account (the mailbox) on this server. Only this combination of server and POP3 account clearly identifies the email address (in the internet there are no server addresses of the same name and within a server there are no user identifying information of the same name). Thus the POP3 service serves to fetch emails, which arrived at an email address with POP3 account. The POP3 server that makes available the POP3 service has two important functions: First it verifies (authenticates) the identitiy of the party who is accessing by means of user name and password. Second it makes it possible to download (fetch) the received emails, after performing verification. How can I install a POP3 email account for my domain?See: How do I set up an email account? The POP3 Server has the same name as your domain (without www), e.g. yourdomain.com and is only used by you. Emails can be retrieved with any email program (e.g. Outlook Express). You can check as often as you want whether new emails arrived, use filters and much more. It is recommended to check periodically whether new emails arrived. At which port does POP3 run?Port 110. The right port number is indispensable for using POP3. Mostly port 110 is preset in email clients and you do not have to set up or change anything. Why does it sometimes take long to download my emails? That can have different reasons. Another reason can be a bad (overloaded or slow) connection between your internet provider and Domaintechnik.com, so that downloading takes more time than it normally does. This case is very unusual and should occur very rarely. What is a SMTP Server?SMTP is the abbreviation for "Simple Mail Transfer Protocol", a widely used protocol for sending emails. The SMTP service is for sending an email to any valid email address. The SMTP Server (which provides the SMTP service) has two important functions: If for exapmle the destination address is wrong, the email is sent back by the SMTP server with the comment "address unknown" or "user unknown". Also other problems can occur, but the reason is always mentioned in the returned email. Is at Domaintechnik.at a separate SMTP Server available on my disposal?Yes, a separate SMTP Server is available on your disposal at Domaintechnik.com. How do I set up an email account?Open your Domaintechnik Control Panel (http://yourdomain.com/menu), click on Email Management and follow the instructions. You also find further information under Creating a New Email Account (Mailbox). If you want to make an independent mailbox available for someone, you should establish a POP3 account. In order to use endless email addresses you have to set up a POP3 account. All mails@yourdomain.com are automatically sent to the mailbox postmaster@yourdomain.com. You can adjust to which email address the emails are transferred then, e.g. to username@yourdomain.com. What is the difference between a POP3 account and an email alias? An email address with a POP3 email account asks for the input of user name (login) and password, so that access is possible. With an email address you can receive emails and send emails with this address as sender. An alias however gives an email only the property thal all incoming emails are forwarded automatically to a specified other email address. It is possible to combine these two characteristics with your Email Manager. Is it possible to forward incoming emails to any email address?Yes, you can do the settings for this property in your Email Manager. What is an autoresponder? An autoresponder is a special configured email address. It sends a standard answer to the senders of incoming emails, e.g. "We are at present on holiday. Your mail will be processed next week ..." Can an autoresponder cause problems? If two autoresponders meet one another, this can lead to an infinite loop untill your email storage space is full. Under no circumstances you should specify an autoresponder address for outgoing emails! If an autoresponder answers at the receiver, and then again your autoresponser replies it leads to an endless iteration. |
